Worthless Check Unit

Check Unit

Historically, in Alabama merchants and businesses had a difficult time with the enforcement of the "bad check" law, so a solution had to be implemented. In the 1980's the State of Alabama initiated a law allowing the establishment of District Attorney Check Units. These units allowed merchants and citizens the opportunity to more efficiently enforce the law as it concerned the writing and negotiating of "bad checks" while also allowing people writing the "bad check" the mechanism to pay restitution. In 1987 the Walker County District Attorney's Check Unit was created to assist merchants and citizens and has been a fixture for the business community ever since.

The Walker County District Attorney's Check Unit (DA Check Unit) helps merchants, businesses and citizens with the necessary forms and manpower needed to navigate the complex criminal justice system and, in doing so, helps collect restitution that most businesses need and find difficult or costly to collect. The DA Check Unit does not cost businesses in Walker County anything to use and has had great success when compared to check collection companies. Many merchants in Walker County have found that check collection companies and mechanisms are not time or cost efficient.
